Welcome to 6th Grade Social Studies!  

Units of Study:

  1. Origins of Civilization (Inuit, Early Native Americans, Olmec, Maya, Aztec and Inca) 

  2.  Human–Environment Interaction 

  3. Exploration of the New World: Columbian Exchange

  4. Colonization and Imperialism (Spanish and Portuguese)

  5. Revolution and Independence: National and global issues 

Document Based Questions assessments but not limited to the following:

  1. Early Human DBQ

  2. The Maya: What was Their Most Remarkable Achievement? DBQ

  3. The Aztec: Should Historians Emphasize Agriculture or Human Sacrifice? DBQ

  4. Civilizations of the Americas DBQ

  5. Age of Exploration DBQ

  6. Latin American Independence: Why did the Creoles lead the fight? DBQ

Grade Reporting Criteria/Standards 

  1. History 

History develops moral understanding, defines identity and creates an appreciation of how things change while building skills in judgment and decision-making. History enhances the ability to read varied sources and develop the skills to analyze, interpret and communicate. 

       2.   Geography 

Geography provides students with an understanding of spatial perspectives and technologies for spatial analysis, awareness of interdependence of world regions and resources and how places are connected at local, national and global scales. 

       3.   Economics 

Economics teaches how society manages its scarce resources, how people make decisions, how people interact in the domestic and international markets, and how forces and trends affect the economy as a whole. Personal financial literacy applies the economic way of thinking to help individuals understand how to manage their own scarce resources using a logical decision-making process of prioritization based on analysis of the costs and benefits of every choice. 

       4.   Civics 

Civics teaches the complexity of the origins, structure, and functions of governments; the rights, roles and responsibilities of ethical citizenship; the importance of law; and the skills necessary to participate in all levels of government. 


Adams12 uses Standards Based Grading and Scholarly Habits on report cards. Teachers collect evidence of student understanding through observations, class work, projects, and test data then evaluate overall performance using the following scale:  4 - 3 - 2 - 1

Scholarly Habits (Respect, Preparation, Risk Taking, Perseverance, and Excellence).  Progress on Scholarly Habits will be reported each semester.

Daily Activities:

Check Google Classroom each day for updates and any missed work when absent.

Homework Policy:

Occasionally homework is assigned to practice and apply knowledge of the content area. If homework is assigned, each student is expected to complete the homework and turn it in according to the due date.
